As with any type of appliance in a home, a hot water heater can break. Sometimes, it may be worth having someone come and repair the hot water heater, but then other times it may be better to buy a new one. As with any type of product that you buy, they will have warranties that vary in length. Many times a cheap one may not have a very long warranty, but then again you do not have to pay as much money for it. If you have not had your water heater for very long, then even if it is not still under warranty, it could still be worthwhile just calling a service company to come and repair it. Many times, it can be something that is cheap to have someone replace it.
If you decide to purchase a new water heater, you should consider if you want a tank less hot water heater or a storage tank hot water heater. If you choose the storage tank type, you will want a larger tank. Many people end up choosing a size that will end up causing you to run out of hot water. The tank less hot water heaters will heat the water, as you need it. The drawback to these is that they will only heat up to a certain amount of water per minute. If you have several people in the household that are using hot water at the same time, it may not be able to keep up.
There are also hot water heaters that are gas and some are electric. Each of these types of hot water heaters has their own advantages and disadvantages with them. If you are wanting to switch from one to the other it may be able to be accomplished, but you will have to factor in on the cost of having this done. You will want to have a professional come in to do this task. If a gas water heater is what you want to convert to, you will need to have gas available at your house.
